Contemporary decorated paper boards with red and blue stripes Cf. Cioranescu 26989. Early French edition, parts 1 and 2 following the translation by Joseph-Pierre Frenais, first published in 1776. Parts 3 and 4 published five years later with an "avertissement des editeurs" explaining that Frenais did not finish his work and the remaining parts of the work had then been translated by the marquis de B(onnay). There is also some discussion about the literary merit and tradition of Sterne s work in this introduction and at the end an appendix gives: Melanges, lettres, pensees, bons mots, & memoires de L. Sterne. - Half-title with old bookplate and small owner s inscription, spines rubbed with some loss of the covering paper, some dog s ears to the first leaves, else fine, uncut, crisp, nice.
